We have just spent 10 days at our little house in a small village called Poio in north west of Spain. Now the craft beer scene is not in full swing here but the "commercial" beer is up to scratch. During our 10 days we manage an impressive quantity of beer consumption totally an estimated 50 plus cans of Spanish beers. Happily all were very enjoyable but some were fantastic. Some highlights listed below:
Estrella Galicia (website here)
The go to larger in Galicia which is served in bottle, can and by the glass in most bars and restaurants in the area. Very easy drinking with a nice malt backbone, slight sweetness and a medium bitterness. Well balanced and hits the spot in the sun.
Estrella Galacia 1906 (website here)
I am a strong believer that certain beers might be a 7 or 8 out of 10 on a normal day but if drank on the right occasion or location become a 9 or a 10. 1906 is defiantly one of them beer for us. Memories of family meals in Spain and holidays in the sun make me think of this beer. A cracker of a toasted malt beer and rocking a great 6.5% this is a special larger. Brewed initial to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the brewery and for a visit by the king of Spain, this one-off brew has now been introduced to the core range.
Mahou Maestra (website here)
This beer was a nice surprise. Toasted beers seem to be a trend going on in Spain with plenty of varieties available. Mahou's offering was one of the best we tried. At a great 7.5% ABV and claiming big hop flavour this was a great addition to the regular beers on offer.
